About
me

I'm Rachel,

the face behind the content. I’m a lifelong horse enthusiast passionate about providing top-notch care for our equine partners. My goal with this blog is to share the knowledge and experience I’ve spent my life acquiring with horse people who care deeply about the well-being of their horses. I’ll cover a wide range of topics and provide insight and tips on managing any horse in any situation. I hope you find a wealth of knowledge here that helps you whenever you need it!

Horse health is always top of mind, and I’ve spent my life working in various industries, learning and perfecting the best practices for horse care. I manage two equestrian facilities, overseeing care for over sixty horses from multiple disciplines. My top priority is ensuring these horses receive proper nutrition, maintain their health and soundness, and function at their highest capacity! Many of these horses have chronic conditions and metabolic diseases, some of the things I’m most passionate about managing.

To understand my perspective, you should know a bit about me! I own five horses named Logan, Rou, Walter, Toula, and Aspen.

I’ve been riding horses since I was a child and spent many summers before age ten helping out at large animal clinics, handling horses, and assisting in any way I could. From age ten to thirteen, I volunteered to run horseback riding summer camps and spent every possible minute on any horse I could get near. In 2010, I spent six months as a full-time stablehand taking care of fifty high-performance Quarter Horses at a top breeding ranch. I worked twelve-hour days and soaked up as much knowledge as I could. I learned about starting young horses, feeding horses of different ages, foaling, and what a long day’s work means. We bought our farm in 2012, which taught me a lot about farm management and general know-how. From 2013-2015, I completed my Associate’s Diploma in Equine Care and Management at the University of Guelph. During the summer between school years, I interned at a natural horsemanship facility, learning a different approach to horsemanship.

Shortly after completing my diploma, I met a large animal veterinarian, and she immediately took me under her wing. I spent late 2015 and early 2016 on the road with her, going from case to case, treating wounds, diagnosing illnesses, taking x-rays, doing lameness exams, completing routine work like vaccines and teeth, and much more. It was a very formative time, and I learned a lot. Soon, I was offered a full-time position at her clinic, doing the daily care and treatment of all the inpatient horses. I worked here full-time from September 2016 until late 2017 and absorbed as much as possible. We saw cases from all over the region, including colic, vaccine reactions, lamenesses, allergic reactions, fractures, surgeries, and more.

I loved my time at the clinic and was inspired to use my knowledge to grow my own business. I spent the next few years working hard on my family farm, acquiring boarders and client horses, and honing my skills. In 2017, I interned with a farrier and learned how to trim horses. Since 2019, I’ve been trimming fifteen to twenty horses regularly. Currently, we care for twenty horses from various backgrounds at the farm; jumpers, dressage horses, barrel horses, and even some gaited horses. Most recently, I accepted a Stable Manager position at a large equestrian facility that houses forty horses who compete in eventing and other English disciplines. This new role means I’m responsible for the care and well-being of sixty-plus horses! I’m so proud of how far I’ve come and how much I’ve learned over the years, and I can’t wait to share it all with you!
